This evergreen conifer grows at a slow to medium rate of 13”-24” a year, reaching a maximum height of about 40’-70’ and a spread of up to 20’ at maturity. This tree prefers moist to well-drained silt or stony loams, gravelly sands. Douglas fir seeds are used by blue grouse, songbirds, squirrels, rabbits, and other small animals. Larger animals eat the twigs and foliage. It provides excellent cover for a wide range of animals. This tree is a terrific addition to a large landscape setting as a specimen, grouping, or mass and is a popular choice as a Christmas tree due to its short, soft needles.
