This hardwood deciduous grows at a fast pace of 12"-48" per year, reaching a maximum height of 60-100’and a spread of 40’-50’ at maturity. Soil conditions include acidic, loamy, moist, sandy, well-drained, wet and clay soils. It can tolerate moderate drought. Sweetgum seeds are eaten by Eastern Goldfinches, Sparrows, Mourning Doves, and other song birds. It is also a food source for smaller mammals. This tree provides a brilliant fall color with shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple.
