This tropical looking tree grows 1-2' per year reaching a max height of 15-20' and a spread of 15-20'. It preferes moist, well drained soils but can tolerate some poor drainage or occasional flooding. Its produces showy cup shaped purple flowers from April to May, and an edible sweet fruit with a tropical taste. Multiple trees are needed for fruit production. It may take 4-8 years for fruit to be produced, and the fruits ripen in early fall.

This tree does not do well in full sun as it is typically found in the understory of wooded areas.
