This small tree can grow greater than 2' per year reaching a height of 15-25'. It grows well in various soil types from dry to moist. It is one of the last plants to leaf out in the spring with bright green leaves. As the season turns to fall the leaves change from a yellow to orange and scarlet. They are highly appealing to birds as a food source and cover. In the landscape they are often used as screen trees, and the large clusters of fuzzy red fruit can be used to make "sumac tea".
